Powerwall 3 Is Now Compatible With Powerwall 2

The wait is over. Tesla’s firmware update has now rolled out, and it lets a Powerwall 3 work alongside an existing Powerwall 2 as a single system. Australia and New Zealand were first in line for the update. If you already own a Powerwall 2 and have been wanting more storage, you finally have a clear way to expand.

Here is what has changed, the setups Tesla now supports, and what to check before you add to your system.

Since the Powerwall 3 launched in Australia in August 2024, it could not share a home with the older Powerwall 2. The two run different architectures. The Powerwall 2 is AC-coupled and pairs with a separate Tesla Gateway, while the Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built into the unit. That mismatch meant Powerwall 2 owners who wanted more capacity had two poor options: hunt down increasingly scarce Powerwall 2 stock, or rip out a perfectly good system and start again.

That barrier is gone. The compatibility is delivered entirely through a Tesla firmware update, sent over the air. There is no hardware to swap on your existing Powerwall 2, nothing for you to download, and no technician visit needed for the update itself. Your Powerwall 2 stays exactly as it is and keeps its original warranty. A Powerwall 3 is then added alongside it as the lead unit.

A combined Powerwall system can now include up to:

• 4x Powerwall 2 units
• 1x Powerwall 3 unit (this acts as the system leader)
• 3x Powerwall 3 Expansion units

That is up to eight units in total. Each Powerwall stores 13.5 kWh of usable energy, so a fully expanded system can hold more than 100 kWh. For most homes that is far more than you would need, but it shows how much room there now is to grow. One note: the Powerwall 3 Expansion units need a Powerwall 3 leader to run, so they cannot be added to a Powerwall 2 on their own.

For an existing Powerwall 2 owner, the practical takeaway is simple. You can add one Powerwall 3 to lead the system, then build capacity further with up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units, all without touching the batteries you already have.

The update opens the door, but not every setup qualifies straight away. A Tesla Certified Installer like Skyline Solar needs to confirm your system is suitable and configure it correctly. A few specifics to be aware of:

• Three-phase homes: on a three-phase grid connection, the Powerwall 3 output in a combined system is capped at 5 kW. A three-phase Powerwall 3 is expected in Australia later in 2026.
• Gateway 1: the original Gateway is not supported in the combined system. If you have one, it needs upgrading to Gateway 2.
• Neurio Meter: this older metering device is not supported either, but it can be swapped for a Tesla Remote Meter.

None of these are dealbreakers. They just mean your setup needs a proper assessment before we recommend the right path.

One question we hear a lot from Powerwall 2 owners is whether their older system is still above board. The short answer is yes. Your existing Powerwall 2 installation remains fully compliant, even if its Clean Energy Council product listing has since expired. Only the new Powerwall 3 equipment being added needs to meet current certification, and it is installed under a new connection agreement. The Powerwall 3 and Expansion units also come with their own 10-year warranty.

Adding a battery is more affordable than it used to be, thanks to a few schemes that can stack together:

• Cheaper Home Batteries Program (federal): eligible Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3 Expansion units attract a discount applied at the point of sale by an accredited installer. The federal rebate stepped down in value from 1 May 2026 and continues to reduce over time, so the sooner you go ahead, the larger the discount. • NSW Home Energy Saver Program: eligible NSW households can spread the cost with an interest-free loan of up to $15,000, repayable over up to 10 years, with the federal rebate coming off the price first. We can talk you through the finance options that suit you.
